On a whim this weekend, we joined our friend NYBarfly for some tastings at the NY Food & Wine Festival held down at the Pier on the Hudson. We must admit, it was chock full of disappointments. Rewarmed wieners, scallops and burgers just didn't live up to the expectation. There were tastings of wine, but no offer of a glass of the ones we liked. And boy was it difficult to navigate the tent of tables with all of the suburban housewives gaggling with their Jersey friends after too many tastings of Merlot.
On a typical Saturday afternoon, tequila is a bit ambitious even for our daring personality. However, when we spotted Espolón from the across the tent, we just couldn't resist a try. Who were those fighting skeletons adorning the label? The labels told a tale and we were ready to put down the B-list wieners to hear it. And as we sipped an early afternoon margarita, we learned that characters Guadalupe, Rosarita and Ramón the Rooster are depicted fighting for Mexican Independence (pic above) and devilishly bringing Aztec culture to a new Mexico City in 19th century vintage style (pic below).
No question Guadalupe and Rosarita stole the festival with their toothy, skeletal grins. So much so that we just had to share such cool tequila packaging with everyone today. Oh, and the Espolón tequila inside the label-bearing bottles tasted pretty good too!
